Malpas - looking to the future.
MALPAS REVIVES HAMPDEN MEMORIES By Gavin McCafferty, PA Sport Motherwell boss Maurice Malpas believes the past can inspire future success for his players in Tuesday night's CIS Insurance Cup quarter-final at Kilmarnock. Well are looking for their third successive semi-final appearance in the competition. Standing in their way are Kilmarnock, whom they beat 5-0 in the Bank of Scotland Premier League in September. The Fir Park side reached the final of the tournament in 2004-05 before being soundly beaten 5-1 by Rangers in a disappointing climax to their first cup final for 14 years. But the dramatic 3-2 win over Hearts in the semi-final sealed in the last minute of extra time has a special place in the memories of Well fans and players alike. And the Lanarkshire outfit had another proud night at Hampden last season when they outplayed Celtic for long periods before losing a soft late goal in a 2-1 last-four defeat. Malpas believes getting the taste for such cup drama will make his players hungry for more memorable nights. "I think we use that to motivate the players - if they need any more motivation," he said. "They want to get to the semi-final, they want to get to Hampden, they want to get one step nearer the final. "And to do that we have to do a hard thing and beat Kilmarnock." Malpas feels Well's thrashing of Killie - which was their first win over the Ayrshire side for two-and-a-half years - will add an extra edge to the game. He said: "I think that will get used for a part of our talk - the last result. "They want to prove to us that it was a one-off. We have got to prove to them that it was what we are expecting - that we are expecting to beat Kilmarnock."
