Fortuna Dusseldorf have called off their promotion celebrations this Saturday after beaten opponents Hertha Berlin made an official appeal against the result.
The play-off fixture between the two clubs on Tuesday did not reach a regular conclusion due to a pitch invasion, according to Hertha, whose appeal will be heard by the German Football Association (DFB) on Friday.
Fortuna won 2-1 in Berlin and a 2-2 draw at home sealed a 4-3 aggregate victory for the 2. Bundesliga club, who have not played in the top flight for 15 years.
But Hertha feel the game should be replayed and Fortuna have decided to cancel their planned official celebrations this Saturday.
"After analysing the situation, we have reached a clear decision that a regular procedure of the game was no longer possible in these conditions," said Hertha's director of sport Michael Preetz.
"We have therefore appointed our solicitor Christoph Schickhardt to officially appeal the result within the necessary deadline."
Hundreds of Fortuna fans streamed onto the field with over a minute of stoppage time still to be played at the end of the match.
It took security forces 20 minutes to clear the field again while Hertha's players were hesitant about returning to the field, which was still lined with fans awaiting the real final whistle.
They eventually did return, with referee Wolfgang Stark bringing an end to proceedings slightly earlier than scheduled when he was located close to the tunnel to make a swift escape as Fortuna fans once again flooded onto the field.
According to Schickhardt, Hertha have a good chance of succeeding with their appeal since it was impossible for the players to focus on football throughout that final minute.
"In the DFB regulations, it clearly states that a game which takes place in such circumstances must not be given an official result," he said on the Bundesliga club's website.
"That necessarily leads to this result being annulled."
Hertha will be requesting that the game be replayed, meaning the outcome of the tie is still hanging in the balance.
