LATE SHOW BOOSTS PSV HOPES
PSV Eindhoven kept alive their faint Eredivisie title hopes and seriously dented the aspirations of AZ Alkmaar as Tim Matavz struck deep into stoppage time to seal a thrilling win at Philips Stadion.
The match appeared to be heading for a draw after goals by Jozy Altidore and Roy Beerens for AZ had been cancelled out by a brace from Jeremain Lens, but Matavz sealed all the points when he turned the ball home after Esteban Alvarado flapped at Lens' late cross.
AZ, second at the start of the match, are now just a point ahead of PSV. AZ trail leaders Ajax by three points but that is likely to extend to six when the Amsterdammers host lowly De Graafschap tomorrow.
PSV forced the first moment of excitement after three minutes, Zakaria Labyad's powerful effort bringing a good save from Alvarado.
The opener arrived on 17 minutes when Lens let fly from the edge of the area and Alvarado could only palm the effort into the net.
The lead was short-lived, though, as with their first decent chance AZ advanced on the PSV goal and pulled level when Altidore drilled home from outside the box.
AZ upped the tempo and might have had a second on 28 minutes, Maarten Martens freeing Beerens but his shot was fisted clear by Przemyslaw Tyton.
Beerens did get it right six minutes later, however, again Martens the provider with a pass from the right and this time the midfielder thumped home a lovely effort via the underside of the crossbar.
Alvarado had to be alert to preserve AZ's lead when he denied Lens, but the equalising goal did eventually arrive 12 minutes from full-time when a long ball forward was collected by Lens and the 24-year-old coolly slotted home his seventh league goal of the campaign.
Charlison Benschop spurned a chance to win it for AZ when he fired wide from six yards in the 85th minute, while PSV thought they had blown their chance to take all the points when Labyad was denied by Alvarado and Ola Toivonen missed with the rebound.
But there was still time for a winner and it arrived two minutes into injury time when Lens' cross to the far post evaded Alvarado and Matavz had a simple task to turn the ball in.
