AZ Alkmaar missed the chance to reclaim top spot in the Eredivisie table as they were defeated by two first-half goals from hosts Roda JC.
PSV leapfrogged their title rivals to go two points clear at the summit yesterday and remain there after AZ's lacklustre performance at the Parkstad Limburg Stadion.
Sanharib Malki put Roda in front in the 10th minute, with Mads Junker adding the second, and last, goal after 33 minutes.
Malki's goal came from the first serious attack of the game, Junker creating the chance with a cross-field pass from the left flank and his partner converting from 10 yards.
AZ were unable to find a response as the game settled into a quiet period that only ended when Maarten Martens found Brett Holman with a wonderful pass. Holman shot left-footed at goal, with Roda goalkeeper Pawel Kieszek on hand to put the ball out for a corner.
A minute later Roda were two in front as Adil Ramzi and Mitchell Donald combined to work the ball to Junker, who nudged the ball over the line from close range.
AZ were again struggling to assert themselves on the match after the half-time interval and almost scored again as Esteban Alvarado saved well from Davy de Beule and then Malki clattered the crossbar from point-blank range.
Substitute Jozy Altidore should have put AZ on the scoresheet in the 63rd minute but after going clear through on Kieszek he shot straight at the goalkeeper.
Roda had shut up shop in attack and were looking to close out the victory. They restricted their title-chasing opponents to just one more attempt in the last 15 minutes.
First Altidore produced an air shot with just Kieszek to beat, then the loose ball was launched to safety.
